Kava is a traditional Pacific drink prepared from the root of the kava plant. Its earthy flavour, hands-on preparation and social nature are all part of the experience.
Made From Kava Root, Prepared With Water
Kava comes from Piper methysticum, a plant native to the Pacific Islands. Its root is dried and ground, then mixed and strained with water to prepare the traditional drink.
Kava has a distinctive, earthy flavour rather than a sweet or flavoured taste.
The powder is mixed with water and worked through a suitable strainer before serving.
Kava is traditionally prepared for gatherings, conversation and time spent together.
Traditional Preparation
How It's Prepared
Add Kava to the Strainer
Place the kava powder inside a suitable strainer bag, then immerse the bag in a bowl of water.
Knead Through the Water
Keep the bag submerged while kneading and squeezing it through the water, keeping the root fibres inside the strainer.
Remove and Serve
Remove the strainer bag, then pour the prepared kava into a bowl or coconut shell and serve.
